Introducing
the 2007 Miss Gilroy Garlic Queen...
Cherise Gowan
and her Court

Little girls often dream of being a princess or
queen in an imaginary kingdom full of loyal subjects
and never-ending happiness. Some of them do realize
their dream, but only a handful can reign over the
Gilroy Garlic Festival.
On Saturday, March 31, 2007, Cherise Gowan, 20,
was crowned Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival 2007.
A resident of Gilroy, Cherise graduated from Gilroy
High School and Gavilan College Cosmetology School.
She participated in advanced chorus and leadership
while in high school, and was in the Cosmo Club
and honor student while attending Gavilan. Cherise
won the Talent Award and the Gilroy Rotary Club
Scholarship. She performed her rendition of "Somewhere
Over the Rainbow" for her talent.
First
runner-up Madelon Thomas, 18, of Gilroy, is
a 2007 graduate of Monte Vista Christian School
where she was captain of the varsity soccer team,
and a member of the honor roll and CSF. She plans
to attend Cal Poly Pomona in the fall where she
will major in hotel and restaurant management. Madelon
won the Garlic Speech Award, the Gilroy Rotary Club
Scholarship, the Gilroy Garlic Festival Founding
Fathers Scholarship, and the ConAgra Foods Scholarship.
She performed her own rendition of Beethoven's "Fur
Elise" on the piano.
Second
runner-up Diane Briones, 18, of San Martin,
is a 2007 graduate of Live Oak High School where
was active in ASB, the senior class rally commissioner,
and a member of the Patriots Club. Diane plans to
attend San Diego State in the fall where she will
major in dance. She has been dancing for 14 years.
Diane won the Past Queen's Scholarship. Diane performed
a jazz dance for her talent.
Princess Adriana Copado, 19, of Hollister,
graduated from Gilroy High School where she was
in the Cheer Club and president of the Ambassador
Club. She is currently attending Gavilan College
with plans to transfer to a four-year university
and major in interior design. Adriana received the
Gilroy Garlic Festival Past Presidents Scholarship.
Adriana performed a hip hop dance for her talent.
Princess
Brittney Jeske, 18, of Gilroy, is a 2007 graduate
of Gilroy High School. She plans to attend Arizona
State and study sports medicine. Brittney received
the Gilroy Garlic Festival Past Presidents Scholarship.
She danced for her talent.
Princess
Uilanikuulei "Ui" Kaanapu, 23, of Gilroy, is
a 2001 graduate of Gilroy High School where she
participated in CSF and choir, and played volleyball
and badminton. She is a 2005 graduate of UC Santa
Cruz and plans to obtain here teaching credential
and a masters degree in education. Ui was voted
Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. She
performed a hula dance for her talent.
So when
you visit the festival this year you will see Queen
Cherise and her Court strolling around the festival
grounds having fun visiting with everyone, enjoying
the fabulous food, and soaking up some our great
garlic sunshine.
About
the Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant....
Contestants
are judged by a panel of five judges on personal
interview, talent, garlic speech and evening gown
at the Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant.
Young ladies between the ages of 18 - 24 and who
live in Gilroy, Hollister, San Juan Bautista, San
Martin, Morgan Hill or Aromas are eligible to enter
the competition. The Queen and her Court represent
Gilroy at various festivities leading up to the
Festival. They have the opportunity to make guest
appearances in local print and electronic media,
in parades and at fundraising events. Most importantly,
they spend all three days at the festival having
a garlicky good time with fellow lovers of the pungent
bulb.
