Florida Artist Wins 2017 Gilroy Garlic Festival Art Poster Contest
April 25, 2017 (Gilroy, CA): Diane Grosman from Winter Haven, Florida was named the winner of the 2017 Gilroy Garlic Festival Art Poster Contest. As First Place winner, Grosman receives a $500 prize, and prints of her winning design will be available for sale during the 2017 Gilroy Garlic Festival (July 28, 29 and 30).
Diane said this is the third time that she has entered the Gilroy Garlic Festival Art Poster Contest, and she was “absolutely tickled to win.” After attending art school in Boston in the 1970s, Grosman worked as a graphic designer until her retirement. Since then, with the encouragement of her husband George, Grosman has returned to her roots as a fine artist. “Winning this contest was like an affirmation for me,” said Grosman. “For the first time, I truly felt like an artist!”
Having lived in Southern California for about 25 years before recently relocating to central Florida, Diane attended the Gilroy Garlic Festival several times and said she has wonderful memories of “Good music, lots of happy people, and the YUMMY garlic ice cream!”
Since three of Diane’s adult children still live in California, she was especially aware of all the rain the Golden State received this winter. She used this as inspiration for her vibrant painting of garlic bulbs, which features swirling rain clouds in the background and the vibrant green of new growth on the bulbs. Grosman reported that the original acrylic painting will be going to a friend’s French bistro café in Prague, La Boucherie M.
Christina Velasquez, Chair of the Gilroy Garlic Festival’s Retail Committee, said, “We’re always pleased when the contest winner is someone who actually knows and loves the Gilroy Garlic Festival. And what a thrill to know that the original artwork will be on display in Europe!”
The Art Poster Contest committee received 29 entries from all over the country, including one from Italy. Larisa Grib from Lake Balboa, California, won second place and a $250 prize. Third place and a $100 prize went to Mardell Schuster from Waxhaw, North Carolina. Clark Semple from nearby San Jose, California won $200 for the “Association’s Choice” prize, voted on by volunteer members of the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association.
During the Gilroy Garlic Festival (July 28-30, 2017), prints of the winning poster will be available at the Garlic Mercantile stores for $10 each. For more information, go to gilroygarlicfestival.com.
